Poems from the Cafe Series
5. Sunrise
By D.G. Opperwall

We’ve stayed out here all night
Disappointed that we can’t get any more beer…
Since the joint closed hours ago.

She has slumped…sleeping now.
The sun starts to rise

I spin my glass playfully.
It decides to roll itself at the concrete
And shatters on the ground.

I pick up a piece and hold it to the light
Refracting the sun into my eyes.

“She’s missing it.” I say to the shard
The shard finds this funny
“You can only look” it says
“See me…the sun penetrates me
I become the light.”

“She may sleep,” it says
“But you’re missing it too.”

The waitress is coming in for the morning.
She stares at me awestruck
Never having seen such a conversation
Between a shard and a man.

I wave at her, smiling.
She can only blink and walk inside.
