Laws
of Attraction Review by Rada Djurica
This is a below average comedy/romance. Maybe Pierce is running out of the money he made he made on the James Bond movies. Peter Howitt, the director behind Johnny English, this time produces an excruciatingly bland romantic vehicle for a non-Bond Pierce Brosnan and Julianne Moore, who is challenged by this genre. It's a match made in lukewarm dishwater. Yecch! It is so obvious that the director made the film for the actors, instead of making a good film. Brosnan and Moore play divorce lawyers who, having spent case after case pitting their limited wits against each other, inevitably do the predictable thing and fall in love. Of course, there's a setback three-quarters of the way through, and one of them has to resolve this problem by running somewhere (to Ireland) to reach the other. Unless you are really turned on by Brosnan, you could sleep through the entire middle hour and still be able to guess what happens upon waking. The couple, after behaving spitefully, stealing cases from each other, end up in the relationship. This is definitely not real life. The question is, who would like to see this? Housewives? Teenage girls? This is the most shamelessly boring romantic comedy I've ever seen. It misses one of the crucial components of the genre: comedy. Moore doesn't have the slightest aptitude for comedy, while Brosnan's peculiar interpretation of drop dead gorgeous "charm," involves half-closing his eyes. This sort of entertainment is frankly insulting for Moore and the former James Bond. If I could, I would tell Brosnan to him return to playing Bond, or at least be really careful when choosing his next film.
