The Fleur Sisters' Debutante Ball
By Mary Ellen Walsh

The Fleur sisters cautiously
peered out of the ground.
Daffy, Fo, Fyfy and Dilly were
dressed in identical
butter-snapped silk dresses
with green high heeled shoes.
Their heads were bare —
to be crowned by the nourishing light.

And there was much excitement —
the time had come
for the Annual Spring Debutante Ball!

But it was unexpectedly chilly —
unexpectedly cold, and damp.
On their heads were placed,
against their will,
white draping velvet hoods.

And then —
then the sisters were tightly snuggled
in heavy white fur coats,
with sharp little button hooks,
tight little strangling hooks.

First their heads were bowed,
then their necks were broken.
By darkfall the Fleur sisters
all lay down —
never to rise again.

The blooms were defeated
by the chandelier falling
on the earthy capret —

in white shards, light and fluffy.
