Valley of Salt

By Alison Eastley

She wasn't interested in a levirate marriage or staying at home
after her husband died.

Perhaps it was grief or maybe she had different needs
when she walked through the Valley of Salt

and arrived at the Town of Bread. As luck would have it,
she was hungry for harvest time.

Ruth decided the best thing to do
was visit the threshing floor. So she bathed

and anointed herself with frankincense and myrrh while repeating
"I am your servant" until it could be believed

her mantra was the most profound religious statement.
No one knows exactly what happened

other than god intervened, made sure she conceived.
Naturally, she gave birth to a boy

otherwise what would be the point of a story
without a man's name beginning the history of a tribe.
