The Door to Nothing

by Eric J. Krause

"This is it. It has to be."

He looked inside. "But it doesn't go anywhere."

"Yes. Yes, that's the point. Remember the riddle. It alludes to a door to nothing. Just like this."

He gave his companion a skeptical look. "I think you're not reading enough into it. Or maybe too much. It's just a wall. The doorway's fake."

"Yeah. Exactly how it should be. Just like the riddle says."

"No, no, no, and no a hundred more times. Let's go check some of the others. We need to find one that opens up to nothing. This opens up to a wall."

"You really don't know what we're looking for, do you? You're here, but... Why are you here?"

He sighed and looked down the hall to all of the other doors. One of them, not this one, was the answer. Finally he turned back to his companion. "To find whatever it is. I just know it's priceless."

"Congratulations, you found it! This is priceless."

He looked at it closely then scowled. "It's a wall!" He stalked off to check other doors.

His companion just shrugged, said, "Suit yourself," and stepped into the wall, passing through as if it were nothing.
