Wolfson & Grenadier Demo Review by Alyce Wilson |
|
Wolfson & Grenadier are an unusual team: poet Wolfson reads his work over musician Grenadier's electronica. The overall effect is sometimes reminiscent of King Missile, especially given Wayne Wolfson's deadpan delivery. But, unfortunately, the tracks are mixed so that the voice track is often difficult to discern. This is frustrating, especially given that Wolfson's words are worth hearing. For example, this line from "All My Best": "She thought that if she put ice cubes in her wine glasses she didn't have a problem, even if they lasted for five glasses." The other songs, "Nikola," "Rain Suite" and "Agent Provacateur" provide textured stories of a writer and the people he meets who, he says, talk to him in hopes he will give them immortality. If Wolfson & Grendadier hope to attract a larger audience, they should seriously consider going back into the studio with the aim of creating a better mix that doesn't muddy the vocals and bury them beneath Grenadier's compelling electronica. This partnership is promising; it's the production that's lacking.
