Questions About Freeing the Mind from the Body
        by Richard Fein
Even before a decision to make a decision is made,
electrodes attached to any skull will reveal a voltage spike
in the amalgam of proteins lipids and ions,
and in the network of synapses.
        The adage is
        where there's a will there's a way,
but the probes reveal that the way leads the will,
and the way is a gestalt of neural pathways.
        The cause is mundane biochemistry,
and the effect is human choice.
Is free will then a shimmering mirage
rising from the electric heat of neurons?
Can effect be discharged from cause?
Can the mind will itself free of its brain?
Is the soul a matter of millivolts?
