PROBE
Morcheeba

Interview by Rada Djurica

How do you sum up Morcheeba, a band who have always defied categorization and whose main objective over four albums has been never to repeat themselves? You could invent an entire new genre for them, as Mixmag did. "Dub-soul-trip-rock-meditation-trance-pop", they called it. But even that is probably only the half the story.

Clubbers love Morcheeba for the trip-hop dreamscapes of tracks such as Trigger Hippie to soothe frazzled nerves after a night of frenzy.

What’s the meaning of Morcheeba, and how did you got to it in the first place?

The meaning is marijuana, and how we gonna get it.

What’s a good party for you and best place to go out?

I don’t go out too much these days. The definition of a good party is good food, good friends, one comfy sofa...

What inspires your music?

We are inspired by lots of things: in life, the people we meet, people we love and other music. More different kind of categories… old music, and music for the future.

When do you write your music?

We sometimes write on the road. Normally, things come to you. You get ideas on the road; sometimes you get ideas at home. And we sometimes do not finish things done on the road cause we are too busy

Who have you been working with, and with whom would you like to work in the future?

We worked with lots of people in the past: with a huge number of hip-hop rappers and people from the old school. I would like to work with Boney Kingsbelly (ph). He’s very good. And… I don’t know really.

I heard that this is the last tour. I heard that you’re splitting up?

We are not splitting up. We are finishing ideas for August, for August 27 in Paris. We are doing projects that are going in different directions.

Why now?

It’s a record company that does, that really -- We are doing all kinds of meetings during our touring and gigging. I suppose that we all need a holiday. And everything is in our mind. But everything is going very well, and we are all very happy.

What's something that you like but most people don’t?

Jazz.

In the video for “Otherwise,” Rod is a good guy and Paul is a bad guy. Is it like that in real life, too?

Yes!
